Walk-In Plant Growth Chambers for Large-Scale Research

A walk-in plant growth chamber, or walk-in growth room, is a controlled environment that researchers step into. It holds more plants and taller plants than a reach-in cabinet, and lets several people work inside at once while temperature, light and, optionally, humidity stay under control.
JKG supplies Percival walk-in growth rooms in India. Rooms are built to any size or configuration, and more rooms can be added or the layout changed as a research programme grows. Each room is fitted with SciBrite or SciWhite LED lighting and programmed through the IntellusUltra control system and touchscreen.
Shown with the optional touchscreen controller. A keypad controller is supplied as standard.

What Walk-In Growth Rooms Are Used For

Walk-in rooms are configured for a wide range of controlled-environment work. Each links to the related research application.

What to Define for a Walk-In Growth Room

These decisions shape the design of a walk-in controlled environment room for plants. Having them ready helps us scope a room and prepare a quotation quickly.

Room size and layout

Floor area, ceiling height, aisle widths and how people and trolleys will move through the room.

Plants and growing height

The tallest plants at the end of the experiment, and whether you need one growing level or several tiers.

Lighting

SciBrite LEDs for adjustable spectrum, or SciWhite LEDs for general plant growth, and the intensity each species needs.

Temperature and humidity

The temperature range with lights on and off, and whether humidity control is needed, and across what range.

Cooling arrangement

Condensing units can be self-contained air-cooled, water-cooled, or remote outdoor air-cooled with an all-weather housing.

Controls and monitoring

IntellusUltra programming, with remote monitoring and notifications through IntellusUltra Connect.

Standard Walk-In Growth Room Configurations

Seven standard room configurations for plant growth, incubation, seed storage and controlled temperature and humidity. Every room is built to order, so size, number of tiers, lighting and options can be changed to suit your work.

LED Lighting for Walk-In Rooms

Rooms can be lit with SciBrite LEDs for adjustable spectrum, or SciWhite LEDs, a white spectrum enriched with red for general plant growth. Tiers can be dimmed independently, and closed-loop dimming with a PAR sensor is available as an option.

Site planning

Planning Your Site

A walk-in room is a building project as well as an equipment purchase. Think through these points early, ideally before civil or electrical work is tendered.

Space and access

Floor area, ceiling height, and a route wide and high enough to bring room panels and equipment to the site.

Power

Electrical supply and distribution for the room, lighting and condensing equipment.

Heat rejection

Where the condensing equipment will sit and how its heat will be removed from the building.

Water and drainage

A demineralised water supply if humidity is required, and drainage where needed.

Installation and commissioning

JKG installs and commissions the room once the site is ready, and checks that it holds the specified conditions.

Service

Annual maintenance contracts, preventive maintenance and breakdown support after installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most. Can’t find what you need? Our team will help.

Rooms are built to any size or configuration. Standard configurations range from about 1.8 × 3 m to 3 × 3 m floor plans, with up to 23.2 m² of shelf area in the seven-tier SS-810 seed storage room.

Choose a walk-in room when you need to grow many plants at once, plants taller than a reach-in chamber allows, or when several researchers must work inside the space. Reach-in chambers suit smaller, replicated experiments.

Rooms can be fitted with SciBrite or SciWhite LED lighting. SciBrite offers adjustable spectrum, and SciWhite is a white spectrum enriched with red for general plant growth.

Plant growth rooms operate from 10 to 44 °C ± 1.0 °C with lights on, incubator rooms from 7 to 44 °C and the CTH-89 from 4 to 44 °C. Humidity control of 40–85% is optional on growth rooms, and the CTH-89 holds 40–85% RH ± 5%.

Yes. The IR-89L5 is a five-tier incubation room and the SS-810 a seven-tier seed storage room holding 4–30 °C at 30% RH above 10 °C. Rooms can be configured for walk-in seed germination as well.

Cost depends on room size, number of tiers, lighting, temperature and humidity range, and the cooling arrangement, plus site work. Share your requirements and we will prepare a quotation.

Yes. More rooms can be added and configurations modified as a research programme grows.

The room is installed and commissioned on site once the space, power, water and drainage are ready. JKG provides installation and commissioning for the equipment it supplies, followed by maintenance contracts and breakdown support.
