Seed Germination Testing and Seed Storage: Controlled Conditions for Seed Science

Seed quality underpins agriculture, breeding and conservation. Germination and vigour tests decide whether a seed lot is certified, how much to sow and which lines move forward in a breeding programme; seed storage decides how long a collection stays viable. Both depend on precisely controlled temperature, light and humidity.
Seed laboratories, breeding programmes, seed companies and genebanks run germination tests to standard protocols, dormancy and after-ripening studies, vigour tests and seed-ageing experiments, and keep working collections between tests. Each needs many replicates under identical conditions.
JKG BioScience supplies seed germination chambers with fifteen lit shelves, including the JKG-66 in its GR configuration and the Percival GR range, and the Percival SS-36NL seed storage chamber.

Requirements

What Seed Germination and Storage Need

Prescribed temperatures

Constant or alternating day–night temperatures held within tight limits on every shelf.

Defined light

Light during the test period for species that need it, from LEDs that closely match natural light.

Many replicates

Closely spaced shelves for trays and Petri dishes, so all replicates share identical conditions.

Humidity

Moist substrates need stable air conditions; storage needs low humidity.

Cool, dry storage

Lower temperature and seed moisture both extend seed life in working collections.

Records

Logged conditions support certification and accreditation audits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most. Can’t find what you need? Our team will help.

Germination tests follow prescribed temperatures, light and duration for each species, often a constant temperature or an alternating day–night regime with light during the warmer period. A germination chamber holds those conditions on every shelf so results are comparable between tests and laboratories.

Germination tests use many small trays or Petri dishes but need little height. Fifteen closely spaced, lit shelves fit far more replicates into one chamber than a plant growth chamber would.

Yes. Programmable day–night set points and photoperiods let one chamber run alternating regimes such as a warm lit period and a cooler dark period.

Cool and dry. Lower temperature and lower seed moisture both extend seed life. The SS-36NL seed storage chamber provides a cool, dry environment with an extended low-humidity range for working collections.

The JKG-66 in its GR configuration (JKG-66LGR) and the Percival GR-41L and GR-66L give the most shelf area; the GR-36L suits smaller laboratories.

Yes, for early seedling stages. For growth beyond a few centimetres, move seedlings to a plant growth chamber with more height.
