LED Plant Growth Chambers with Specialized Lighting

In many plant experiments light is the variable being tested. Spectrum, intensity, photoperiod and uniformity all change how a plant grows, flowers and responds to stress, so an LED plant growth chamber for research should give you precise, repeatable control of each one.
JKG supplies growth chambers with Percival’s specialized LED lighting systems: SciBrite for adjustable spectrum, SciWhite for high-intensity white light, and IncuWhite, IncuBrite and PetriClear for incubators and tissue culture. Every system can be fitted to chambers of any size, from bench-top units to walk-in rooms.

Light Quality Plant Growth Chambers

SciBrite LED chambers are built for experiments that need specific wavelengths. A multi-channel dimming system controls each colour from 1 to 100% in 1% steps, so you can build your own spectrum, change it through the day, and run different settings on each tier.

Benefits of LED Growth Chamber Lighting

Compared with fluorescent lamps, SciBrite and SciWhite LEDs give:
More control over colour composition and intensityLess demand on the temperature control systemImproved humidity control and temperature uniformityMore uniform light distributionSmaller day/night calibration offsetsLower energy use and less heat rejected to the roomLonger life for key chamber componentsMore growing height inside the chamber
Options

Lighting Options and Upgrades

Available on JKG-41, JKG-66 and Percival chambers, depending on the model.

Top-tier upgrades

Upgrade the top tier to 1,000, 1,200, 1,500 or 2,000 µmol/m²/s, or to 2,100 µmol/m²/s and higher, for high-light crops.

Independently dimmable tiers

Set each shelf to its own light level as a percentage of output, and run several light treatments in one chamber.

Closed-loop PAR control

A PAR sensor feeds back to the dimming system to hold a set intensity as lamps age.

Daily light integral

Programme light by the total photons delivered per day rather than by intensity and hours alone.

Supplemental LEDs

Add white, red, blue or far-red LEDs, or IncuBrite colours, to tune a SciWhite chamber’s spectrum.

Eight-colour SciBrite tile

Blue, red, warm white, far red, green, cool white, photo red and violet in one programmable tile.

LED working light

A light that switches on when the door opens, so you can work without disturbing the photoperiod.

UV, germicidal and aquatic lighting

Specialty lamp banks for UV exposure studies, surface decontamination and aquatic research.

How to Choose Growth Chamber Lighting

Species and growth stage

Light needs differ widely, from low-light Arabidopsis and lettuce to high-light cereals and fruiting crops.

The question you are asking

A light-quality study needs adjustable colour channels; routine growth needs dimmable white light.

Intensity at plant height

Specify the PPFD you need at canopy height. Intensity is quoted 15 cm from the lamps and falls with distance.

Number of tiers

Independently dimmable tiers let you run different light levels in one chamber; each tier reduces growing height.

Measurement

Chamber settings and what reaches the leaf can differ. A spectroradiometer or quantum sensor shows what plants receive.

Heat load

Light adds heat. LED lighting reduces it, but check the chamber holds your temperature range at your intensity.
Measure what your plants receive

Light Measurement and Plant Response

Pair your chamber with PSI instruments that measure light spectra and photosynthetic response, such as the SpectraPen and FluorPen ranges.

A controlled-environment chamber that uses LED lamp banks instead of fluorescent lamps. LEDs give finer control of intensity and spectrum, add less heat, and improve temperature and humidity control.

Yes. SciBrite colours dim from 1 to 100% in 1% steps, SciWhite from 10 to 100% in 1% steps, and tiers can be dimmed independently as an option.

SciBrite reaches 1,850 µmol/m²/s and SciWhite 1,700 µmol/m²/s at 15 cm as standard, and LED lighting can be configured to 2,100 µmol/m²/s or higher. LED configurations of 2,100 µmol/m²/s or higher are available on JKG-41 and JKG-66 chambers.

Arabidopsis chambers come standard with SciWhite LED lighting, with SciBrite as an option for light-quality work. See Arabidopsis chambers.

Yes. Supplemental IncuBrite or SciBrite LEDs can be added to tune the spectrum, or to give one shelf or the whole chamber a specific wavelength.

Yes. Walk-in growth rooms can be fitted with SciBrite or SciWhite LEDs, with independently adjustable columns or tiers. See walk-in growth rooms.

It lets you programme light by the total photons delivered over a day (mol/m²/day) rather than only by intensity and hours.
