Plant Growth Research in Controlled-Environment Chambers

Plant growth research asks how genotype and environment shape development, biomass and yield. To answer it, the environment must be defined and held: the same light, temperature, humidity and CO₂ for every plant, every day, and in every repeat of the experiment. Field and greenhouse conditions change with the weather and the season; a growth chamber or room removes that noise.
Typical work includes growth and development studies in crops and model plants, heat, cold and drought stress, elevated CO₂ and climate-change scenarios, photoperiod and flowering experiments, and seedling production for later trials. Each places different demands on lighting, temperature range and humidity control.
JKG BioScience supplies reach-in plant growth chambers, walk-in growth rooms and LED lighting systems for growth research, including the JKG Universal Series (JKG-41 and JKG-66): manufactured for JKG by Percival. We help you specify the conditions, install and commission the equipment, and keep it running.

Conditions

Conditions That Decide Plant Growth Results

Specify these parameters for your species and experiment before choosing a chamber. Values should be stated at plant height and with lights both on and off.
ParameterWhy it mattersWhat to specify
Light intensity (PPFD)Drives photosynthesis and growth rate; too little gives elongated, weak plantsTarget µmol/m²/s at plant height, and whether it must be dimmable
Light spectrumRed, blue and far-red balance shapes flowering, height and leaf developmentWhite LED, white enriched with red, or multi-colour dimmable LEDs
PhotoperiodControls flowering in day-length-sensitive speciesDay length and any ramps for dawn and dusk
TemperatureSets development rate; day–night differences affect height and yieldDay and night set points, with lights on and off, and any ramps
Relative humidityAffects transpiration, disease and stomatal behaviourRange needed, and whether active humidification or dehumidification is required
CO₂Raises photosynthesis; elevated CO₂ is used in climate studiesAmbient, enriched or controlled set point
Growing height and areaLimits plant size and replicationShelf area, number of tiers and clear height to the lamps

Getting Reliable Results from Growth Chambers

Replicate across time or chambers

A single chamber is one experimental unit for its condition. Repeat runs or use several chambers so treatment effects are not confused with chamber effects.

Rotate plant positions

Light and airflow vary slightly across shelves. Rotating or randomising pots reduces position effects.

Measure, do not assume

Check light at plant height and log temperature and humidity. LED output and sensor calibration change over time.

Match the root zone

Pot size, substrate and watering affect growth as much as air conditions. Keep them consistent across treatments.

Plan for plant height

Choose clear height and tier spacing for the final plant size, not the seedling.
Preventive maintenance keeps conditions within specification through long experiments.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most. Can’t find what you need? Our team will help.

Many crops grown for research need considerably more light than Arabidopsis, and high-light cereals benefit from chambers that reach high intensities at plant height. The JKG-66 delivers up to 1,200 µmol/m²/s as standard and LED configurations reach 2,100 µmol/m²/s or higher. Tell us the species and target and we will size the lighting.

Light falls with distance from the lamps, so intensity figures are only comparable at a stated distance. Measure at plant height with a quantum sensor such as a PSI SpectraPen and record it in your methods.

Each chamber holds one set of conditions. If you need to compare temperatures, CO₂ levels or photoperiods at the same time, you need one chamber per condition, plus replication over time or across chambers to separate treatment from chamber effects.

For heat, drought and pathology studies, and whenever vapour pressure deficit matters, yes. For routine growth it is often optional. Specify the range you need with lights on and off.

Yes. Percival’s WeatherEze feature simulates real-time, historical and climate-change weather on chambers with the IntellusUltra controller.

Reach-in chambers suit several experiments with different conditions; walk-in rooms suit large plant numbers or tall crops under one condition. See reach-in chambers and walk-in growth rooms.
