Plant Science Applications and the Equipment They Need
| Application | Key conditions | Typical equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Plant growth research | Light intensity and photoperiod, day–night temperature, humidity, CO₂ | Reach-in chambers, walk-in rooms, JKG-41 and JKG-66 |
| Plant physiology | Stable conditions plus precise measurement of water use and photosynthesis | Growth chambers with PlantArray, FluorPen and FluorCam |
| Arabidopsis research | Even, moderate light on low tiers; 20–22 °C; long or short days | Arabidopsis chambers, JKG-41 AR and JKG-66 AR |
| Algae and cyanobacteria | Light per shelf, temperature, optional CO₂ | Algae chambers, JKG-41 AL |
| Tissue culture | Shelf lighting without condensation, gentle airflow, 20–28 °C | Tissue culture chambers and rooms |
| Plant phenotyping | Repeatable conditions and objective, continuous measurement | PlantArray, PSI fluorometers and light meters |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is controlled-environment plant research?
Growing plants in chambers or rooms where light, temperature, humidity and often CO₂ are set and held, so that results reflect the treatment or genotype rather than the weather. It makes experiments repeatable across seasons and between laboratories.
Should I choose a reach-in chamber or a walk-in room?
Reach-in chambers suit several independent experiments and limited space; walk-in rooms suit large plant numbers or tall crops under one condition. Many institutes combine both. See reach-in chambers and walk-in growth rooms.
How much light do my plants need?
It depends on the species and question. Arabidopsis is commonly grown at moderate light, while cereals and other crops often need much higher intensities to resemble field growth. Tell us the species and target intensity and we will recommend the lighting.
Can I combine phenotyping with a growth chamber?
Yes. PlantArray and PSI instruments work inside growth rooms and chambers, so conditions and measurements are both controlled. See plant phenotyping.
